Class Teacher - Mrs Longden
Spring Term 2010 Newsletter Autumn Term 2009 Newsletter
English: We will be learning how to write reports and fact sheets. Linking
to our topic, pupils will be learning how to write a report about their
chosen area after exploring what makes a good report during reading time.
Class reading lessons will be based on texts linking to different habitats.
Our new class story is Escape from Shangrila by Michael Morpurgo.
• Please make sure that your child is reading regularly at home.
You could work with your child to look through library books, encyclopeadias
etc to find information linking to the habitat your child has chosen
to research.
Maths: We are still working hard to make sure pupils are able to set
out and use column addition and subtraction. We have introduced and are
now using grid method multiplication. The Crocodiles will also be experiencing
the joy of long division – we will be introducing the chunking
method. If (like me) you were not taught grid multiplication or the chunking
method for long division whilst at school and would like a chance to
find out what it looks like and how it works please get in touch.
Continue to learn those tables 5-10 minutes everyday. Encourage your
child to apply their times table skills to other problems etc …if
they know
6 X 7 =42. Can they work out 42 divided by 6 60 X 7 6 X 700 0.6 X7 etc.
Your children have chosen this term’s topic. They have decided
on the theme…
I’M A CELEBRITY GET ME OUT OF …WHERE ?
The topic will involve children researching different climatic regions
of the world and choosing a location to send a group of celebrities.
Pupils will have to find out all about their chosen habitat (Which plants
live there? Which animals live there? What do you need to survive there?
Etc). Pupils will be required to produce research and reports as well
as work out a budget for their show. This topic links really well to
Science work on plant life cycles, habitats and adaptation.
ICT: We are learning how to use the Internet safely and effectively.
The Internet is the world’s biggest database and we will be learning
how to search it effectively and safely.
At home, please make sure you know what your child is doing on the
Internet and help us to reinforce Internet safety. Pupils will also
be developing
their multimedia skills further by creating radio advertisements to
promote their show –using podcasting software.
Our PE days are Thursday and Friday. Please make sure children have
black shorts, white t-shirt and pumps in line with the school policy.
No jewellery to be worn on these days. Weather permitting PE will be
outside and children may bring a tracksuit and trainers in addition to
their normal PE kit on that day.
Mrs Stevens is supporting teaching and learning this term.
Homework – Children need to read daily, spend 5-10 minutes on
times-tables skills and spellings are sent home weekly. Pupils will also
be set regular project or enquiry based homework to support learning
in class.
Maths Groups - This year the Crocodiles will be working
in groups for Maths taught by either Mrs Knott or Mrs Longden
