English: We will be learning about stories with repetitive patterns,
rhymes and phrases. We will also be telling and writing recounts, listening
to and reading traditional stories and poetry. At home, you can help your
child by encouraging them to say and write simple sentences about their
experiences with full stops and capital letters. Encourage them to re-read
their writing to check that it makes sense and that the words are in order.
You could get them to practise sounding out the words they hear when they
are spelling, whilst continuing to practise spelling high frequency words.
In handwriting this term we will be making sure that all letters are
formed using the correct movement and that we can make our writing a regular
size. Attached is a letter formation sheet so that you can see the way
your child is taught to form their letters at school. This term we will
also be putting words in alphabetical order and using simple dictionaries.
Also attached is a sheet with all the letter sounds that we have or are
covering in class. By the end of the year your child needs to be able
to read and write words with these sounds in them.
Maths: We are continuing our work on the number system to include numbers
to 100, counting in 2s, 5s and 10s. We will be sorting 2D and 3D shapes
by their properties, comparing weights and capacities, and measuring using
units of weight and volume. Calculation will include addition of 10 to
a number, subtracting from a 2 digit number and adding to a 2 digit number
by counting on. Math’s home work will go home on Friday and it will
relate to the week’s learning objectives.
Science: We will be finding out about living and growing looking at similarities
and differences between plants, animals and humans. We will also be looking
at habitats and planting outdoors as the weather improves. Our topic this
term is based around out Science objectives and will be focusing on jungle
animals.
Topic: The Jungle book, as well as other stories and films on this theme
will be used to inspire art work, collage, painting and sculpture about
animals and plants. In PSHCE we will think about environmental issues
in the jungle as well as how people live in small villages in poor rural
areas. We will be making puppets as part of DT and moving safari vehicles.
In RE we will be listening to stories from the Bible and talking about
the wonder of the world, people and wildlife.
ICT: We will be using ICT to support our learning across the curriculum.
Your child will learn to use programs in school that enable them to search
for information relating to our topics safely. At home, please make sure
you know what your child is doing on the Internet and help us to reinforce
Internet safety. We will also be developing our word processing abilities
by typing captions for pictures and story sentences.
Our PE days are now Wednesday and Thursday. This has changed so that
we have a longer lesson in the hall to do gymnastics on the apparatus.
Please make sure children have black shorts, white t-shirt and pumps in
line with the school policy. No jewellery is to be worn, especially on
these days.
Mrs Dodson will be working in class 1 every morning to support the children
with their learning. She will also assist me in listening to the children
read on a regular basis. Mrs Godany will work in the class for 3 afternoons
each week.
We are planning a trip to Chester Zoo as this will support our jungle
topic. You will find out more about this shortly.
